The whole head celery plants pass in front of the loading positions and are placed on a flighted conveyor belt. This takes the plants into the enclosed cutter cage and a choice of water jet or rotary cutter is employed to trim of the root and leafy head.
Waste falls direct into a flooded floor drain, which conveys it outside the process area.
The system can also be used to cut the remaining petioles into shorter lengths.

The cut petioles are then elevated to a pneumatic separator, which blows the waste away to the flooded floor drain.
With most of the reject material already removed by the separator the need for manual inspection is minimized.

The product then passes through two product washers, which employ fan-jet sprays to remove peat and dirt.
The second washer has chilled water with a disinfectant added to sterilize the product prior to delivering into the high care area for packing.
